Many people don’t realize that Tae Kwon Do is more than just about self defense. Tae Kwon Do is also about building your mind and developing discipline. In the part of Tae Kwon Do called Poom-Se, you learn a choreographed series of movements that display the different types of skills that we learn in Tae Kwon Do. It is as much an art form as it is an exercise. You also learn to memorize philosophies and recite then in preparation for your performance.
It is also about developing endurance both physically and mentally. That is about patience, which is a good thing to have in many situations. It takes a long time to work your way up the ranks of Tae Kwon Do. It typically takes 5-6 years to get a Black Belt. My Sabonim (teacher)tells us that a Black Belt is just a White Belt (beginning belt) that never quit. Physically, it is a very challenging sport. Work outs are very demanding and constantly pushing you to the point of exhaustion. We are also always learning new exercises that work different muscles and develop new skills of balance and motion. That is why Tae Kwon Do is challenging.
